UK Trade & Investment provides in-depth support to keyUKindustries in order to help industry players grow their businesses and build export markets. UKTI required a single supplier to undertake a review and simplification of their sector websites and bring them together under a single, fit for purpose content management system. Secondly, UKTI wanted all sites hosted under a single agreement.
What we did
The starting place was a thorough review of the current estate. This identified three different content management systems providing a complex and untidy solution with each website having a different set of technical limitations in place. A requirements exercise pulled together the needs of each site owner and identified a core set of requirements. An open source (PHP) content management system based on the Symfony framework was identified and put in place providing all core functionality. Additional functionality was then developed for each site owner to provide specific needs. Individual creative solutions were provided to best demonstrate the content and guidance provided by the toolkit sites. Hosting was provided on a single server which had been security passed and penetration tested to meet government guidelines.
We recognised that working with the existing incumbent (Bray Leino) was going to be important to the successful handover, re-development and convergence of the various sites and so we worked closely with them to deliver a timely solution for UKTI. This included regular conversations and documentation to ensure that there was a ongoing engagement, rather than a single point of handover.
Significant enhanced value was delivered by pulling together the sites within a simplified framework. Each site owner was able to manage their content with an easy to use content management system. Core functionality was provided to each site owner ensuring reduced training needs and easy roll-out for future sites. A single server environment ensured patches and upgrades were provided to the benefit of all sites and security issues were kept to a minimum. A single SLA delivered increased value for money.
