International Energy Agency (IEA)

Defining future web strategy for an international EU body through stakeholder engagement

Digital Strategy, Systems and specification design (inc. prototyping), Requirements, Information Architecture (IA)

Requirement

As an inter-governmental organization advising 28 member countries on reliable, affordable and clean energy, the IEA needs clear and concise information flow, none more so than in the digital channel. This project required the consolidation of its bloated 40+ websites into a more coherent portal. The overall requirements were to:

  • deliver a single coherent web strategy from a wide and varied stakeholder base
  • provide the design agency with a set of structured IA documentation
  • provide an evidence base for the new website design
  • validate the content management selection

What we did

A consultation programme listened to numerous stakeholders through workshops, technical interviews, depth and telephone interviews. The workshops provided not only insight into the requirements of various users but ensured the highest possible stakeholder buy-in.

Following a synthesis of the gathered information, our consultants developed a suite of architecture outputs and a detailed report and providing the IEA with the evidence to support their business case.

Value

The report had intrinsic value in setting out an effective direction for the organisation’s web presence over the coming years. The output and recommendations made validated the IEA’s overall web vision and provided an agreed corporate approach. As a process, the project served to unite a disparate audience behind a common goal, prompting staff to re-evaluate the potential role of the web and generating enthusiasm for continued development.
